Here’s why we invest in training vehicle graphics installers at TKO. It’s for you, the customer. We take pride in our installations’ quality and believe we have the best training program in the industry. If you take a minute and read about our installation training system, you’ll understand why we are consistently rated one of the best.

Not long ago, I wandered the TKO facility looking for photo opportunities and ideas for an upcoming company newsletter.  I watched two new installers working together on a 53′ semi-trailer. One was on a scaffold, the other below. They shared information about a large decal they were installing, checking notes, and referring to a blue notebook. They were in training.

I walked over to the other side of the installation bay and asked their supervisor what they were doing. He explained they were installing an old overstock decal as part of their training. So, I asked about the blue notebook, and he shared that it was a training manual. After they completed the installation, their work would be checked and critiqued by the supervisory team. Later the trainees would remove the decal, following written de-identification procedures, and then take a written quiz about what they’d learned. Training vehicle graphics installers is complicated.

The Training Manual

I asked for a copy of the blue notebook. It contains the USGA (United Application Standards Group) installer training manual. The training manual includes:

  • Safety
  • Equipment and Supplies
  • Job Records
  • Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Techniques
  • Removal Techniques

After completing each section of the manual, trainees take written exams.

Quizzes and Testing

The training schedule includes a series of written quizzes covering each chapter of the training manual. Here are a few examples of the questions.

  • Is it OK to stand on the top rung of a step ladder?
  • Will isopropyl alcohol remove grease and wax?
  • Is it acceptable for a little dirt to remain after preparation cleaning?
  • Can a sharp knife be used to pop bubbles?
  • When should job photos be taken?
  • Typically where is the level line on most vans and cars?

Field Training

We pair new installers with experienced applicators for field training. Some of the training will be in-house such as the example I mentioned. And some of the training is in the field where trainees can watch and learn from certified master applicators and work side-by-side receiving advice, help, and constructive criticism.

Why We Invest in Training Vehicle Graphics Installers

Adhesive vinyl graphics applicators don’t fall off trees. Because master applicators are developed, not born, it can take years of hard work and dedication to become the top tier of vehicle graphics installers. At TKO Graphix, we’re proud of our teammates with 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years of experience. And we thank them for helping us bring the next generation of installers along. Because using a systemized training procedure has many benefits, but one of the greatest is it allows us to identify inexperienced young people of high character and train them on the job.

So, that’s why we spend so much time training new applicators. We think it’s worth it because many of our teammates, who at one time were inexperienced trainees, have become our best employees. We hire for character and then train skills, and our customers appreciate it.
