Like many things in business, vehicle graphic design isn’t about you—it’s about your customer. Too often, business owners and managers work from the point of view that what they like, what appeals to them, is what’s good for their business. And just as often that’s not true. Let me ask you a question, are you buying your product or service or is your customer?
Everyone Doesn’t Think the Same as You
I’ve talked about this a lot. People think, gather information, and learn differently. So, just because you or your leadership team like something doesn’t mean your customer will. The key is to learn what appeals to your customer. What do they want? How do they think? What will reach them?
Who Is Your Customer?
This begins with learning who your customer is. As I outlined in the post, 4 Keys to Identifying and Reaching Your Audience, it starts by answering these two questions.
- What problems do you solve?
- Who’s searching for a solution to those problems?
Designing Vehicle Graphics to Reach Your Target Audience
The next step is to consider how to use vehicle graphics to reach your target audience. For example, if you owned a restaurant and wanted to increase your catering market share you might promote that you cater to groups fewer than 50. If so, how would you approach the vehicle graphic design?
- Show beautiful pictures of your food next to your phone number and email address, and then list the types of cuisine you serve.
- Share an image of your storefront and show the special offers your restaurant runs, listing food and drink specials by day.
- Show an image of a catered event, mention you serve groups under 50, and add a call to action with a special offer along with your contact information.
Did you choose number three? If so why? Was it because it reaches the demographic the eatery wants to connect with? Can you see how someone could think numbers 1 and 2 were good ideas?
It’s Not About You
It’s not about you, it’s about your customer, and it begins with knowing what you do well and who you serve. Because once you know who you want to reach, you can work on what will attract your target audience’s attention.
