There are more than 3 reasons why signs fail to get the job done, but these 3 are critical. Have you ever stopped and considered how many signs we’re exposed to daily? Thousands upon thousands, but how many do we see? What makes those signs stand out? It may be because someone took the time to think about what potential customers would see. If the following three questions aren’t considered, the chances are that your sign probably won’t get the job done. Here are 3 reasons why signs fail.

3 Reasons Why Signs Fail

1. Location

This first of 3 reasons why signs fail may not seem like it’s under your control, but there are things you can do about the location. Local sign ordinances may restrict your choices, however, it’s critical that you take advantage of what is allowed. Before designing any sign, determine where the sign will make the most impressions. For example, if the front of your building is on a side road and the back is on a major thoroughfare, where do you put a sign? Probably both front and rear. The largest allowable and affordable in the rear of the building with more exposure and a smaller identifying sign at your storefront.

2. Content

You may be inclined to put too much information on your sign. If your sign is primarily seen by vehicle traffic, how much time do drivers have to view it… a few seconds at most? What is the primary message or call to action? What is essential for you to share about your organization? What would you say if you were only allowed 20 characters, four or five words?

I know you’re not that coffee company out of Seattle, but we all know what to expect when we see the green and white siren. It’s simple. Use the KISS method (Keep-It-Simple-Stupid) or risk having a sign with no clear message. Too much information or a poor choice of content is one of the most common reasons why signs fail.

 3. Color

Do a little research. Are there any traditional colors for your industry? For example, have you noticed how many fast-food restaurants use yellow and red? Consider how color influences human expectations. For instance, black is probably not a good color for a children’s clothing store or bright red for a funeral home.

“There is more to color than just what meets the eyes. Color influences perceptions, touches emotions, and sways decisions.” — Psychology of color
