If you have a brick and mortar business, you probably have exterior signage, but is it what you need? I asked Lee Faulkner, TKO Signs manager, how to determine what’s the best exterior sign for any business.
What are the local ordinances? This is the place to start. Permits and ordinances will limit some possibilities. For example, it’s not uncommon to disallow lighted exterior signs when a residential neighborhood is nearby. Other restrictions may limit options as well. Recently, a company inquired about removing their current sign and installing it at their new location; unfortunately, it was seven square feet too large for the local ordinance.
What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want to attract new business, direct customers to your location, or present an image? If you know the message you want to present, a sign shop can help you in crafting that message into a sign.
What is your budget? Having a budget will help a sign shop design to your needs. Without a budget, financially unrealistic designs may be presented. A good sign shop will look for the most cost-effective solutions. More is not always the better.
Should the sign be lighted? If ordinances allow, do you need a lit sign? Does the nighttime traffic in your location support one? Can it be easily seen? Lee was recently asked about a lit sign on a wall in front of a corporate headquarters. He advised not to put any sign there, as trees blocked the view.
Ground, building or combo? What kind of sign do you need and where, a monument sign at the drive entrance, channel letters on the building’s front, dimensional signage, channel cabinets, or a combination of signs?
