CSI Protective Services is a private security company employing uniformed guards—primarily military veterans. As Chad Butts, owner of CSI Protective services stated, “We try to give back to those who have given so much already.” CSI has been, “Certified by the Veterans Administration and the City of Indianapolis as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business.” They offer residential and commercial protection.

This Graphic Pops!

It’s a common complaint among designers that clients want designs that POP then limit the designer to colors, fonts, and copy that will never POP. Not the case here. Chad offered his ideas and direction to the design then allowed the TKO team of designers to do what they do best—make it happen. The video doesn’t do the final product justice. As Chad says, “I get stopped all the time by people on the street and police officers commenting on the professionalism and quality of the graphics.”  This patrol car looks good on the street.

FAQ: What is Reflective Adhesive Vinyl?

Reflective adhesive vinyl, or reflective, is a material that reflects light. It doesn’t create light; it isn’t lit, and you don’t notice it in the daylight. It reflects light in the dark such as vehicle headlamps.

How is it Made?

There are two types of reflective adhesive vinyl material:

Retroflective – contains small glass beads that reflect light

Prismatic – is layered with very small prisms that reflect light

Reflective material is manufactured to different compliances; while some may be suitable for flat surfaces, such as a traffic sign or a side door law enforcement shield, they may not be suitable for 3 dimensional applications. Materials rated at higher levels of compliance may be required to bend around curves and corners.

How is it Used?

The use of reflective material on most emergency vehicles is regulated and/or mandated. Ambulances, fire vehicles, police cruisers, and other first responders use reflective vinyl in varying degrees. Reflectives are used on signage; from stop signs to wayfinders they light the way. But this shiny material isn’t limited to government agencies.

At TKO Graphix and TKO Signs, we’ve used reflective materials on a variety of commercial and private projects. We’ve used reflective on company buses and golf carts, and we’ve made signs with company logos, images, and backgrounds using reflective vinyl. The uses for this material are only limited by imagination. I saw a work truck on the road the other day using stylized lightning in the background—reflective lightning would certainly grab attention. 12 Stars Media Video Shoot…I mean Wall Mural

When you enter the office of 12 Stars Media  one of the first things you notice is video equipment set for action; it’s as if you’ve walked into the middle of a shoot. No surprise—that is what they do, but there is a surprise—it’s not a shoot, it’s a wall mural.

The Photo

Michelle Downs, 12 Stars Director of Content and Community, took the photo, which became the wall mural, at PDA Photography during a PERQ video shoot.  When the shoot was completed, she liked the way the equipment looked—ready for a shoot, but with no one in the frame. She’s used the image on blog posts and shared it on social media.

The Inspiration

Zachary Downs, 12 Stars President and COO, thought the blank wall called for an image. He wanted to create the illusion of work in progress, but didn’t know if the wall was large enough.  Michelle’s photo it was exactly what he had in mind. Zach and Rocky Walls, CEO, reached out to TKO Graphix and connected with TKO Signs National Account Manager, Jack Stackman. Zack still wasn’t certain the image was large enough to give visitors a sense of video in action; Jack, with his 30 years of experience, assured him it was.

The Product

And it was…or is. Zach was blown away by the finished product. Because of Michelle’s great photo, Zach’s vision, and TKO’s help the 12 Stars Media wall mural is alive with action.

Choose the best material for the job

Next comes choosing the best materials for your specific vehicle graphics process. There are different adhesive vinyl graphics material designed for varying uses. “Vinyl begins as Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC), then additives create the vinyl film used to wrap vehicles. Plasticizers are added for flexibility, pigment is added for color. Then UV absorbers and heat stabilizers are added to create a vinyl that will conform to a vehicle’s shape and withstand the elements. Cast, or “premium vinyl,” is a process similar to making a cake. Ingredients are mixed and solvents are added, and then poured into a casting sheet, which is baked, allowing the solvents to evaporate.

This process makes a very flexible, thin, shrink-resistant material. Another manufacturing option is the calendar or economy process. In this method, ingredients are mixed, but solvents aren’t added. Like pizza dough, the vinyl is rolled and stretched into the desired shape. Decaling a Race Car for a Weekend at Indy

I try, at least once a day, to walk down to our installation bay and just nose around. Yesterday I strolled into the area and watched as two of our 3M certified employee installers applied decals on a race car. At first I wasn’t certain of the race series—then I saw the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) decal. Over the years my wife and I have attended SCCA events around the Midwest.

A Late Model Corvette

I noticed Jonathan standing to the side with a big smile on his face; I introduced myself and asked about the car. He told me it was an older “Vette” one of three he and his father Robert raced. When asked, Jonathan thought the car began life as a 1988 Corvette, but wasn’t certain. I asked what he thought of the work and he explained it was an older car that wasn’t in the best condition; they were preparing it for Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational June 6th through June 8th, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The car had been repainted, and now it was time for decals. As the decal application progressed so did Jonathan’s enthusiasm. The car was starting to look pretty darn good. Why Your Fleet Graphics Suck

If you’re reading this it may be because you wonder if your fleet graphics suck, they probably do. But there is an analytical approach to determining the effectiveness of your vehicle graphics. How many calls to action have your graphics accounted for? What new customers were made aware of you through your fleet graphics? How many customers have commented on your fleet? So, if your answer is I don’t know, none, and nobody—you have a problem.

Why Your Fleet Graphics Suck

There are multiple causes as to why your fleet graphics suck. It begins with communication. Your graphic provider needs to know what you want, what message you want to send, and the purpose of your fleet graphics. Without this information it’s difficult to design a vehicle wrap that fits your organization and meets your needs. From there it goes to design and then installation. However, there are many steps between design and installation such as material choice, printer color calibration, and surface preparation. Your Design Misses the Point

The point should be to get the word out about what you do, who you are, share contact information, and rally a call to action. If you put too much information — you lose the point. Not long ago, I attended an event catered by food trucks. One of the trucks graphics was awful. It was overlapped, bulging at equipment, with gaps at the seams. I politely asked who installed the graphics and was told … I’m not making this up — the owner’s brother-in-law. So, the point is to hire a professional; poorly installed vehicle graphics reflects poorly on your business.

The graphics on this Milto Cleaners delivery van are—clean. As we’ve said before and will repeat, the most important aspect to vehicle graphics is sharing the message; everything else is secondary.

What Makes This Wrap Clean?

To begin with, it’s uncluttered. Nothing detracts from the message and call to action—your eyes are drawn to it. Two colors, black and red on a white background, a simple yet elegant logo of crossed hangers, and the typography add up to an effective design. Simple. Effective. Elegant. It would’ve been easy to have gone overboard on this van wrap. It’s a painting contractor—we could have covered the vehicle in color, splashed it with paint and plastered it with brushes. Instead, it’s bright, but not too busy, informative without being jumbled, and attractive. At first glance, any passerby knows and understands it’s a painting company. This wrap works.
